With time, weather forces cause materials to fade away, weaken and lose strength, exposed to rust and decay.

Wind deposits debris and dust onto roof crevices and gutters and with time support the growth of weeds, grass and all sorts of algae.

All these are capable of causing blockage to rainwater runn-off and material weakening, rust and decay.

About Roofs
Here is an overview of what you need to know about roofs - the main categories and types as well as materials for constructing roofs. Also important are the signs of developing roof problems

Two Main Categories of Roof

Pitched roof – Is a triangular-shaped roof with a high gradient. It is the commonest roof model and more traditional to this day.

Flat roof
 – A flat is actually not a completely flat as the name may suggest.

It slopes down to a side(s) to permit slow run off of water, else a pool of water will settle on the roof after each rain.

However, the gradient is very low compared with the pitched roof.

Both pitched and flat roof categories have their advantages and disadvantages.

The pros and cons of roof categories

Low cost of installation and repairs are the most important advantages for choosing a flat roof besides taking less time to install compared with the pitched roof.

It may be the best choice for roofing side-of-the-house garages, storages and porches.
Roof Categories: Pros and Cons ...Learn More...
The major disadvantage a flat roof is that it is inefficient in allowing water drainage because of its low gradient. So, with time it could lead to leaks in the rooms beneath and that makes the flat roof a bad option in a rainy weather.

Pitched roof is the commonest roofing model because of the obvious reason of durability, efficient rainwater drain off, allowing roof dryness and prevention of dampness in the rooms beneath.

Compared with the flat roof, a pitched roof prevents dust and debris from settling on it’s surface as these materials are washed off by rainwater easily due to the high gradient. Consequently, it prevent weeds, grass and algae from settling and growing on the roof which can block gutters and pipes.

The high angle of pitched roof provides room for attic space which the flat roof doesn't provide. However, the major disadvantages of pitched roof include the high cost of construction and being more prone to wind action since it’s higher in the air as well as longer period of installation.

Signs to Identify Roof Problems

Signs of roof developing problems are more obvious in rainy and windy areas than in dry and quiet locations. These two factors also cause roofs to cave-in more quickly.
...More on sign of roof problems...
The following are easy signs of developing roof problems:
  • Buzzing, whistling and shaky noise during windy time
  • Wet marks on the ceilings
  • Dripping sound in the ceiling during rain which may not be associated with a visible wet spot under the ceiling or anywhere around the room where the noise is heard
  • Visible deposits of debris on the roof
  • Growing weeds or grass on the roof
  • Popping roofing materials on the roof – an indication of loosening parts.
  • Discoloration, decay/rust of guttering materials
Once you start to observe any of these signs, then, it’s time to seek our inspection and evaluation services.
Types of Roof

Gable is the commonest roof in cold regions and it usually has a two-sided (triagular) shape that is very steep in gradient.

Butterfly roof has an inverse shape of gable. The two sides converge inwards forming a ridge “V-shape” at the middle of the building.

Hip is a type of roof which has it’s side sloping downwards over the external walls but usually not a large gap away from the walls.

Mono-pitched roof has many names such as pent, shed, lean-to and skillion roof. One surface of the roof slopes down and hanging singly away from another side of the roof.

Mansard or Gambrel roof has two roof sections of different gradients on each side of the house. The lower section on each side has very steep gradient – almost vertical in position.

Whatever type of roof your house is wearing, the challenges it may be facing, be assured that we know how to treat the problems without costing pains to your pocket.

Types of Roofing Materials

There are several kinds of roofing materials and surprisingly the very oldest types such as bamboo sticks, rafters and datches are still being used.

These may be in special kinds of structures such tourist huts in the wilderness, specialised restaurants and training camps.

While we generally do not undertake roofing project built with the aforementioned materials, however, we are trained to manage a wide range of other traditional and contemporary roofing materials.

Examples of those materials include
:
  • Asphalt Shingles
  • Clay
  • Metals
  • Polycarbonate
  • Glass
  • Solar inserts
  • Tiles
  • concrete
  • Slate roof tile
  • Shingles
  • Wood
Shingles

There are a few types of shingles. Asphalt shingles  come from asphalt component of petroleum.

Durable but not as far as slate tiles, however, it comes in several beautify colours.

It also weighs less than slates making it a better choice where structural integrity is a factor.

Fibre Glass shingle

This is a second type of  shingles but contains less asphalt component and it's less durable.

Tiles
 and concrete

These are heavy and expensive but their durability attracts the high cost.

Due to durability, their maintenance cost is reduced to the barest minimum in the long run.

This saves a considerable amount of money for the homeowner.

Metals roofing sheet

Metal sheets are predominately used in commercial roofing model.

Examples are aluminum, copper and steel sheets, come in the form of shingles and panels or sheets.

Tata Steel Roofing materials is a new brand of material that has a special advantage of lighweight and durability under cold wealther.

Wood – For roofing, the popular type include the The Oriented Strand Board (OSB) and the plywood. Some the cons include durability if properly maintained, classic beautiful and traditional look and energy efficiency.

However, it has a considerable disadvantages – prone to fire damage, expensive, high maintenance cost, insect and rodent attack, quick degradation under rainy weather conditions that could promote algae growth and decay.

Transparent materials – Examples of these include Polycarbonate and Glass – These transparent roofing materials might sound fragile but not exactly. While the polycarbonate is flexible, roofing glass isn’t but toughened and sometimes laminated.

The polycarbinate  is an innovative improvement over glass and it’s becoming homeowners’ better option because it is by far cheaper than glass as well as being light weight.

However, it does not offer equivalent insulation properties of glass unless solar inserts are installed to boost the energy efficiency. Transparent materials are commonly used where natural light is needed in the homes or greenhouses.

Slate roof tile – This is one of the oldest roofing materials which remains a popular roofing choice due to it’s durability and fire-resistance being made from rock. Slates are not cheap certainly due to it’s properties.

Clay – material has durability quality and with variety of shapes and colours, the beauty to roofing is enhanced. Contrarily, weight is major problem which increases the cost of installation because of the need for extra reinforment of the roof framework.
